Christine's Past Part I

Three years ago, Sudden Weekly had a photo shoot with Christine Ng Wing Mei. With her cat-like eyes and half parted lips, she exuded sexiness, but in those photographs, you could not find one smiling picture. The Christine today is completely different. She did not choose to wear overtly sexy outfits. And in every photo, it was difficult to find one in which she is not smiling.

Happiness shows on the face. If one's life is going well, it will be obvious in our laughter. Many people say that a bad woman will be tamed by marriage. The saying is true, but it is also dependent on who the man is. "My greatest wish is to go to Paris with my husband in October. I would like to enjoy life and purify myself." Christine's English and French pronunciation was very clear.

Many will remember that when Christine was only a 20 year-old ATV beauty pageant winner, she had married a wealthy husband older than her by 30 years. But today's Christine is a different woman, a changed woman after the life-changing experiences in the last 10 years.

Today, Christine is the star of 3 TVB series, the female lead in 2 comedies. Her 7 year marriage has been sweet and just lacks a child. Her last 37 years of life is enough to fill a teary-eyed autobiography.

"Earlier, Sharon Chan Man Chi became my little god-sister. Sharon consults me about everything, as I have a lot of life experiences!" Christine continued to laugh outrageously.

Erasing the Past Successfully

"Welcome to the House" and "Criminal Investigation Bureau" are simultaneously broadcast and even her older warehouse series, 街 市 的 童 話 is aired in the afternoon. Earlier in the year, "Greed Mask" and "Women on the Run" were shown. Her exposure level has matched that of a top fadan.

It is easily noticed that producers and the audience have accepted Christine Ng. Her old image as a gold-digger has been successfully erased. "Actually I never committed any wrongs. I did not commit murder nor arson. Someone close to me died and many thought that it was my aggressive intention to erase the past."

It's a pity because Christine did not prostitute herself and was never "taken care of" by a wealthy man. She did not get plastic surgery. But let's be honest with ourselves, back then [after the death of her first husband], did you not judge her? If not, then maybe you were unaware of the entertainment news at the time.

"Hong Kong is a very small city. When [my ex-husband Yung Kwong Pui] died, people gossiprf about it for over 10 years. The audience did not start accepting me until the new millenium (2000's). When I first entered the industry, everyone labelled me as a 'bad woman.'"

"I have always dressed like a flirtatious woman. The people who once gossiped about me even started praising my fashion taste now. Oh please! My fashion style has not changed over the years! I even won the Best Dressed Award recently."

"After getting married with my second husband, Casey Lin Hoi Tong, many people thought I was lazy and idle. I told TVB many years ago I wanted to film more series and develop my career further. But even if you state your intentions, no one will just take your word for it. How will they know that you will not take a vacation in the middle of a filming project? You have to prove yourself through actions. When I filmed 'Twin of Brothers' in China for several months, TVB saw me with new eyes [and recognized my dedication]."

Opportunities are gained through hard work. In the past, Christine has starred in lead roles at ATV, but the ratings were miles apart from TVB, so it is difficult to make comparisons. Now Christine has once again attained female lead status, partnering with venerable actors like Bowie Lam and Maggie Shiu Mei Kei. Undoubtedly Christine should be quite satisfied.

"I am really happy! I have never been part ofproducer Chik Kei Yi's normal casting, but he decided to use me! Working alongside Bowie and Maggie, I have to put forth my best acting efforts each day! It's very exciting!"

"During my prime years from 20 to 30 years old, I was wrestling with my life. I never defended my own dignity in those years. But even if I tried, no one would believe me. But I do not regret it; without my past experience, perhaps I would be unable to act nowadays."

Love is Simple

Several years ago, Christine had a wild streak in her, with a mix of "Desperate Housewives" and "Sex in the City." She has successfully broken into the household market, with her flair remaining the same. The more "housewife" she is, the more natural she appears.

Christine's conversations are littered with English these days. Here were some of her phrases during the interview: "If a woman doesn't maintain well-balanced emotions, it's very easy to develop breast cancer." "I can be very b*t*hy sometimes." "One of my elder brothers is a teacher while another is a physical therapist."

A woman's transformation is due to the man by her side. Christine's husband, Casey Lin, graduated with a history degree from the City University of Hong Kong. Casey is now a renown figure in the advertising world. Christine has been influenced greatly by Casey and has recently started reading Qian Zhong's "Besieged City."

"I learned a lot from my husband. He told me that in order to be a good actress, I have to establish a strong ground in the Chinese language first. In addition to my observances of daily life, I would be able to express those ideas into speech form. I read books like scripts; it helps me understand the characters' personalities."

Judgemental people will readily say that Christine pulled "certain ropes" in order to attain a happy marriage. But the truth is that her husband Casey likes Christine's straight-forwardness, which is far from the plotting and scheming ways of modern Hong Kong women.

"It's not like I don't know how to scheme. On the other hand, I am very skillful at it, but I hate people who are so political. I am your typical Pisces and place romance ahead of all matters. I love being in love--loving a man and having him love me back. I have no time to calculate whether my marriage to Casey has changed other people's perspective of me."

"Although I am not highly educated, I never felt that I can not be with my husband due to our educational differences. If a man loves you, he will love you for the person you are. When he no longer loves you, he will have 100 reasons, whether you have PhD or not."

Their 7 years of marriage has been sweet. Christine has many ways to settle the differences in their marriage, but they can not be considered "schemes."

Christine said, "I can humorize all unhappy incidents in our marriage. For example, if I come home one night and am in a bad mood, I will say to my husband, 'I am very unhappy today since I met a troublesome reporter. This weekend, I must eat a vigorous dinner, but you have to ask me out on a date!' When the weekend comes, Casey would really run out to the street and prepare the car. He will then ring the door bell and say, 'My wife, will you go out with me on a dinner date?' A husband and wife should have their own little flirtatious ways."
